The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, said the good legacies left behind by the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi as the state governor would not be forgotten in a hurry by the people of the state.
Ogundoyin speaking during the 7th Roundtable Of Late Governor Isiak Abiola Ajimobi organized by the senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation, on Monday, at University of Ibadan.
The Speaker, who expressed his feelings towards the programme stated that “I would like to take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to Her Excellency, Dr. (Mrs.) Florence Ajimobi, the President of the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation (SAAF), for her tireless efforts in keeping the legacies of her late husband, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, alive. Ma, your dedication to preserving his memory and continuing his work is truly commendable.
“Through your ingenuity and leadership, SAAF has remained committed to promoting peace, security and humanity, values that were dear to Senator Abiola Ajimobi’s heart. As we gather to celebrate the 75th posthumous birthday of Senator Ajimobi and the 7th Annual Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable, we honour not only his memory but also the entire Ajimobi dynasty as well as his supporters and advocates for ensuring that his spirit continues to inspire and motivate us”.
“The theme of this year’s Roundtable, “Legislative Oversight and Accountability in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects,” couldn’t be more timely and relevant especially at this present time. As Nigeria navigates its complex governance landscape, the need for effective legislative oversight has become increasingly crucial. This theme acknowledges the challenges that have hindered the country’s progress, while also exploring the prospects for reform and improvement’.
Ogundoyin also stated that as lawmakers, Legislative oversight is a vital component of democratic governance which ensures that the executive branch is accountable, transparent, and responsive to the needs of the citizens. Through oversight, legislatures can prevent the abuse of power, corruption, and the infringement on citizens’ rights. It also enables us to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of government policies and programs, identifying areas for improvement and making necessary adjustments.
However, as beneficial and useful as legislative oversight is, it faces multifaceted and complex challenges in Nigeria : lack of adequate resources including funding, personnel, and infrastructure, especially at the state level across the federation are some of the problems bedeviling it.
