The Federation of Oyo State Students’ Union (FOSSU) National Council has entered into a partnership with the Oyo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to promote road safety and improve access to essential transport-related services for students across the state.
The collaboration followed a courtesy visit by the FOSSU leadership to the FRSC Sector Headquarters in Ibadan, where they were received by the Oyo State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Dahunsi.
According to a statement issued by FOSSU, the meeting produced several resolutions aimed at enhancing student welfare and strengthening road safety awareness on campuses.
One of the major outcomes was a proposal for a subsidised driver’s licence registration scheme for students in tertiary institutions across Oyo State. FOSSU said the FRSC Sector Commander expressed support for the initiative and pledged to work with the students’ body to ensure the process is affordable and accessible.
The meeting also approved the establishment of a dedicated FOSSU–FRSC Students’ Desk Office at the Oyo State Command. The office is expected to serve as a platform for road safety education, student engagement, complaint resolution and joint sensitisation campaigns.
In addition, the FRSC acknowledged FOSSU’s request for official number plates for the union’s headquarters vehicles to improve identification during official engagements.
Speaking after the meeting, FOSSU National President, Sen. Ahmed Mufutau, described the engagement as the beginning of a strategic partnership focused on protecting students.
“This is more than a courtesy call. It is the beginning of a life-saving partnership. We are grateful to Corps Commander Kehinde Dahunsi for listening to students and acting. Road safety is student safety,” he said.
On his part, Corps Commander Dahunsi commended the student leadership for its proactive approach and reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to collaborating with FOSSU on initiatives that promote responsible road use.
“Students are critical stakeholders in the road safety project. We are happy to open our doors and work with FOSSU to build a culture of responsible driving,” he said.
Both organisations agreed to commence joint road safety awareness campaigns across tertiary institutions in Oyo State ahead of the new academic session.
The meeting was attended by senior officials of the FRSC, including Deputy Corps Commander Alade, Officer Chioma and the State Command Students’ Desk Officer, alongside members of the FOSSU National Council, including the National President, Senate President, Social Director I, Financial Secretary, Clerk and Sports Director.
