Panic swept through parts of Ibadan on Friday night after a fire broke out at Fresh FM, one of the city’s leading radio stations.

The incident was first reported by Samuel Ibikunle Arugbobois on Facebook, who urged the public to alert the nearest fire service. His post, which quickly circulated across platforms including Connect Ibadan, read:
“Fresh FM is currently on fire! We urgently need the Fire Service to respond immediately. Please spread the word and alert the nearest station.”

As of press time, the extent of the damage and any possible casualties had not been confirmed. Emergency responders had yet to issue an official statement, though eyewitnesses and social media users continued to call for urgent action to contain the blaze.

Fresh FM, founded by renowned musician and broadcaster Yinka Ayefele, is one of the most listened-to stations in Ibadan and the South-West, famed for its mix of news, music, and entertainment.

More updates are expected as authorities address the situation.

The Oyo State Police Command has declared its full readiness to ensure a peaceful, credible, and fair electoral process during the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Osifeso Adewale, the Command assured residents that “we are fully prepared for the bye-election… We assure the public of a credible, secure, and fair electoral process.”

The statement noted that multiple initiatives had been undertaken to bolster security and protect the integrity of the polls, including consultations with key stakeholders and the signing of a peace accord involving political aspirants and their supporters.

“This accord entails a collective commitment to refrain from any violent or destructive actions that could potentially disrupt the peace during, before, during and after the elections,” the Command said.

Osifeso explained that the Command had also organised a joint show of force with other security agencies to demonstrate its operational readiness. He described it as “intended to underscore the Command’s readiness and serve a stern warning to any individuals or groups considering actions that may jeopardize the electoral process.”

The police warned that only officially recognised security agencies would be allowed at polling units on election day.

“No quasi-security organizations will be allowed to participate,” the statement read, adding that all electoral laws would be strictly enforced, including the prohibition of campaigning or displaying political insignia at polling units. It further stated,

“The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages near polling units will be strictly prohibited to maintain decorum and public order,” while also banning uniformed personnel from escorting aspirants to polling stations.

Vote-buying and intimidation were also flagged as offences. “The distribution of financial inducements or any coercive tactics to influence voters is strictly forbidden,” Osifeso said, warning that anyone caught with weapons or instruments intended for violence “will face immediate legal sanctions in accordance with the law.”

To maintain safety, the Command announced a restriction on movement from midnight until 5:00 p.m. on election day across Ibadan North, Ibadan North East, Ibadan South West, and adjoining boundaries. Residents were advised to be aware of observation points and road closures, including Agbarigbo–Jembewon Road, Adamasingba–Danax Intersection, Bere–Oje Road, Idi-Ape Junction, Ojoo Road Stretch, Ajibode Junction, Ijokodo–Apete Road by the Customs Barracks, and Eleyele–Sango Road.
Osifeso assured that security would be visible and proactive throughout the exercise.

“Our measures will include high-octane convoy patrols, intelligence-driven raids, stop-and-search operations, and continuous surveillance across the metropolis,” he said.

The Command urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to play their part in ensuring peace. “We encourage community members to discourage youths from being manipulated into engaging in violence or disruption. Please be aware that failure to adhere to these guidelines will result in legal consequences,” the statement warned.
Reiterating its commitment to protecting democracy, the Command concluded,

“Working together, we can ensure that the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election is conducted free from fear, violence, or intimidation.”

Oyo State, one of Nigeria’s most historically significant and resource-rich regions, has in recent years embarked on a strategic push towards industrialization. Positioned in the southwestern part of the country, with Ibadan as a central urban hub, the state is naturally poised for industrial advancement due to its human capital, agricultural base, and geographic connectivity. Yet, for decades, industrialization remained elusive. The past six years, however, have witnessed a focused approach to building infrastructure, stimulating local manufacturing, attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), and aligning economic policies with global development goals.

This series examines the state’s industrialization trajectory, framed around global benchmarks such as the Human Development Index (HDI), Foreign Direct Investment inflows (FDI), Ease of Doing Business rankings, and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The objective is to assess the extent to which recent efforts have translated into measurable industrial progress and to identify proposed areas requiring further attention.

Infrastructure as a Pillar of Industrialisation

A core requirement for industrial development is the presence of reliable infrastructure. In recent years, Oyo State has made visible progress in this area, particularly in transport, energy, and logistics—three components critical to attracting industrial investment.

Transport and Connectivity

Over 500 kilometers of intra- and inter-city roads have been rehabilitated or constructed since 2019, significantly improving connectivity between urban centers and rural production areas. Notable among these are arterial routes linking Ibadan to Oyo Town, Ogbomoso, and Iseyin. These improved logistics corridors have enhanced the movement of goods and reduced transit times for raw materials and finished products, encouraging investment in processing and manufacturing.

Power and Industrial Energy Supply

Industrialization has traditionally been stifled by Nigeria’s national grid instability. In response, several independent power projects and embedded generation schemes have been initiated within the state. These projects—mostly structured through public-private partnerships—now supply electricity to select industrial zones, reducing reliance on diesel generators and lowering operational costs for businesses.

Industrial Clusters and Investment Zones

The state has developed and designated special industrial zones and clusters tailored to meet the needs of specific sectors such as agro-processing, light manufacturing, textiles, and renewable energy.

In Ibadan, one of the state’s largest investment zones now houses dozens of medium-scale manufacturing firms operating in the plastics, pharmaceuticals, and construction materials sectors. The zone offers tax incentives, subsidized land, and improved security—key elements that have attracted industrial investors.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Business Climate

Improved Investment Inflows

Oyo State has witnessed a steady increase in foreign direct investment, especially in the post-2020 period. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the state attracted \$78 million in FDI in 2023, up from \$45 million in 2020 – representing a 73% increase over three years. These investments are primarily concentrated in manufacturing, agribusiness, and real estate development within industrial corridors.

Ease of Doing Business Reforms

Reforms aimed at reducing bureaucracy and encouraging enterprise formation have begun to yield results. The state streamlined land registration processes, cut turnaround times for construction permits, and reduced duplicative licensing for manufacturing firms. These interventions contributed to Oyo’s improvement on Nigeria’s sub-national Ease of Doing Business index, where it moved from rank 22 in 2018 to rank 10 in 2023. Entrepreneurs now report faster turnaround times for business incorporation and improved access to regulatory agencies.

Human Development Index (HDI): Education, Health, and Income

1. Education

A significant contributor to industrial capacity is the availability of skilled labor. Oyo State has expanded access to technical and vocational education through investments in training centers and curricula aligned with industry needs. As of 2024, the number of accredited technical institutions in the state had grown by 40% since 2019, with more than 15,000 youths completing skills development programs in areas such as electrical installation, welding, plumbing, and ICT.

2. Health

Healthcare services, an important dimension of HDI, have also seen moderate improvements. Primary healthcare centers across rural and peri-urban areas have been upgraded, with a reported increase in healthcare access from 58% in 2019 to 71% in 2024. Improved health outcomes contribute directly to labor productivity and economic resilience.

3. Income and Employment

The industrial and services sectors now contribute more significantly to state GDP than they did a decade ago. According to data from the Nigerian Gross State Product Report (2024), the state’s industrial sector grew at a compound annual rate of 5.3% between 2019 and 2024. Employment in manufacturing rose by 12.7% over the same period, driven by job creation in agro-processing, logistics, and light assembly plants.

Technological Innovation and Digital Economy

Innovation has emerged as a silent enabler of industrial growth. The establishment of digital hubs and maker spaces in Ibadan and Ogbomoso has fostered local technology development, especially in agritech, fintech, and manufacturing automation. These hubs serve as incubation centers for startups and also host training programs in coding, machine learning, and 3D printing.

More importantly, linkages between academia and industry have begun to materialize, with universities and polytechnics collaborating on R\&D, product design, and workforce development. These efforts are aligned with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and reflect a shift toward knowledge-based industrialization.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Alignment

Oyo State’s industrialization strategy aligns with multiple SDGs, especially:

* SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): Through increased employment in industrial sectors and support for SMEs.
* SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): Via industrial cluster development, power generation for production, and transportation upgrades.
* SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy): Through renewable energy projects supporting rural industries and powering processing facilities.
* SDG 4 (Quality Education): By expanding technical and vocational education relevant to the industrial workforce.

Despite significant strides, industrialization in Oyo State is not without its challenges:

1. Infrastructure Gaps – Rural road maintenance remains inconsistent, and several remote clusters still face challenges in electricity access and broadband penetration.

2. Capital Access for SMEs – While larger industries benefit from investment incentives, smaller manufacturers still face barriers in accessing financing and affordable industrial land.

3. Data and Monitoring Systems – Development planning is sometimes hindered by poor data collection, especially on industrial output, labor productivity, and environmental compliance.

4. Urbanization Pressure – As industrial activity concentrates around Ibadan and its environs, pressure on housing, waste management, and urban planning has intensified.
