A senior member of the Olubadan-in-Council and Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, has warned that the involvement of traditional rulers in partisan politics could erode the integrity and authority of Ibadan’s traditional institution.
Oba Ajibola gave the warning on Friday during a press conference held at his Sanyo Palace in Ibadan, where he emphasised the need for a clear separation between royal duties and political engagement. He stressed that traditional rulers must remain neutral as custodians of culture, peace, and unity across the land.
According to him, any departure from this neutrality risks weakening the moral authority of monarchs, who are traditionally regarded as fathers to all, regardless of political affiliation.
“Governance today is guided by law, and traditional rulers must operate within that framework. Whether there is a gazette or not, once you are a member of the Olubadan-in-Council, you cannot participate in partisan politics. It is either the throne or politics,” he said.
The Balogun noted that the moment a traditional ruler openly aligns with any political interest, it creates division among the people and diminishes public confidence in the institution.
He also dismissed speculations of a rift between Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, describing such claims as baseless and misleading.
Ajibola further refuted reports alleging plans to remove the Olubadan or impeach the governor, insisting that no such discussions exist within the traditional council.
“There is no crisis in Ibadan. Our elders are fully in control, and we have mechanisms to resolve issues internally,” he stated.
He cautioned against the spread of misinformation, warning that unverified reports could threaten the peace and stability currently enjoyed in Ibadanland, and urged residents to remain calm and disregard alarmist narratives.
On the controversy surrounding the coronation of Senator Sharafadeen Alli as the Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Ajibola reiterated his opposition to political involvement by traditional title holders. He added that any act of partisanship by such individuals should attract appropriate sanctions or rebuke from the Olubadan-in-Council.
While acknowledging the importance of politics in governance, the Balogun warned that dragging traditional institutions into partisan struggles could have far-reaching consequences for unity and security.
“It affects stability, security, and the unity of the state. That is why we must be careful. We are committed to preserving the peace Ibadan has built over time,” he added.
