The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave, paving the way for Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal to assume the responsibilities of Acting Governor during his absence.
The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary session following the consideration of a formal letter from Governor Makinde notifying the lawmakers of his intention to proceed on leave, in line with constitutional provisions.
The correspondence was read before the House by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting in the absence of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.
According to the letter, Governor Makinde’s annual leave will commence on August 10 and end on September 11, 2026. He is expected to officially resume office on September 14, 2026.
Following deliberations, the lawmakers unanimously approved the request and affirmed that Deputy Governor Lawal would oversee the day-to-day administration of the state throughout the governor’s absence.
The Assembly expressed confidence in Lawal’s capacity to provide effective leadership and ensure the continuity of governance, citing his previous experience in acting roles.
“The House is confident in the seamless continuity of governance in the state under the Deputy Governor,” the Assembly stated in its resolution.
Speaking after the approval, Deputy Speaker Fadeyi wished Governor Makinde a peaceful and refreshing leave, assuring that the legislature would continue to maintain cordial relations with the executive arm in the interest of the people of Oyo State.
He described the state’s governance structure as stable and capable of sustaining policy implementation and administrative activities during the governor’s absence.
The lawmakers also commended Governor Makinde for formally notifying the House of his intention to proceed on leave, describing the action as a demonstration of respect for the Constitution, the rule of law and democratic governance.
The Assembly subsequently directed that its resolution be transmitted to the executive arm of government for necessary action.
