The development needs of Ibarapa Central and Ibarapa North are clear. Our communities need better schools, more accessible roads, functional healthcare facilities, reliable water supply and infrastructure that can support agriculture, enterprise and local commerce.
These are not problems to be acknowledged only during an election season. They require a representative who understands them and is prepared to pursue solutions through the institutions of government.
For Bashorun Soliudeen Lawal, that commitment did not begin with the decision to contest an election.
Bashorun Soliudeen Lawal has never held elective office. Yet, without the authority, budgetary influence or institutional access that comes with being a legislator, he facilitated the construction of 18 classroom blocks at Igangan High School.
That intervention deserves attention for a simple reason: it shows what he considers important.
Eighteen classroom blocks mean additional learning spaces for students and improved educational infrastructure for a public school serving the community. More importantly, the project offers a practical indication of how he approaches public needs, not merely by identifying a problem, but by seeking the channels through which something can be done about it.
For a first-time candidate, this is a meaningful place to begin.
The question is no longer simply what he hopes to do. There is already an example of what he has been willing and able to pursue without holding public office.
EDUCATION DESERVES GREATER ATTENTION
The intervention at Igangan High School is only part of a much larger educational need.
Across the constituency, public schools require continued investment in classrooms, furniture, laboratories, libraries, ICT facilities, water, sanitation and the rehabilitation of ageing structures.
A child should not have to receive a lesser education because of the condition of the school available in his or her community.
Lawal’s educational agenda should therefore build on what he has already demonstrated: identifying areas of need and pursuing government and institutional intervention where it can make the greatest difference.
With a seat in the Oyo State House of Assembly, that effort can move from private influence to formal representation.
ROADS THAT SERVE THE ECONOMY
For Ibarapa, road development is inseparable from economic development.
Farmers need dependable routes to move produce from farms to markets. Traders need easier movement between communities and commercial centres. Residents need accessible roads to schools, health facilities and places of work.
This makes community roads, farm-access roads and economically important connecting routes a legitimate priority for representation.
The role of a legislator is not to personally construct these roads. It is to ensure that the constituency’s needs are properly represented in government, to push for budgetary attention, engage the relevant ministries and agencies, follow up on approved interventions and use legislative oversight to demand implementation.
Ibarapa needs a representative who understands that getting a project mentioned is not enough. The real value is in following it until the people can see and use it.
WATER AND HEALTHCARE THAT WORK
Development must also reach the basic services on which families depend.
Communities need reliable sources of clean water. Existing water facilities that have become dysfunctional require attention, while undeserved areas need appropriate new interventions.
Healthcare demands the same practical approach.
Primary healthcare facilities should not merely exist as buildings. They should have the equipment, water, electricity, maternity facilities, essential supplies and personnel necessary to serve the people effectively.
These are precisely the kinds of needs that require a persistent voice during budget preparation, legislative deliberations and engagement with the executive arm of government.
INFRASTRUCTURE THAT HELPS PEOPLE EARN A LIVING
Ibarapa’s economy has enormous potential, particularly in agriculture, trade and small-scale enterprise. But potential alone does not create prosperity.
Farmers need infrastructure that makes production and transportation easier. Traders need better commercial facilities. Artisans need an environment in which their businesses can function. Young entrepreneurs need access to the infrastructure of a modern economy.
This is why infrastructure should not be viewed simply as a collection of government projects.
A road can open a market to a farmer. A classroom can expand a child’s possibilities. A functional health centre can protect a family. Reliable water can improve an entire community.
Good representation should understand these connections and pursue investments that have a direct bearing on people’s lives.
SO, WHY BASHORUN SOLIUDEEN LAWAL?
The strongest case for Bashorun Soliudeen Lawal is not that he has already done everything. No first-time candidate can credibly make such a claim.
His case is that he did not wait for elective office before finding a way to contribute.
The facilitation of 18 classroom blocks at Igangan High School gives the electorate something more substantial than an intention. It provides an early indication of his priorities and his willingness to pursue an intervention where he saw a need.
Election to the Oyo State House of Assembly would place greater tools at his disposal: a voice in the legislature, participation in the budget process, oversight authority and direct institutional engagement with the ministries and agencies responsible for development.
That is where the promise of his candidacy lies.
