The University of Ibadan Students’ Union has dissociated itself from a recent publication by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, concerning the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale.
The Students’ Union, in an official statement dated July 24, 2026, said the publication was neither initiated, endorsed nor authorised by its leadership.
The statement, signed by the Union’s President, Comrade Temidayo S. Adeboye, and General Secretary, Joshua O. Shontan, stressed that the Union’s leadership was not consulted before the publication was made public.
The Union, therefore, clarified that the publication did not represent its official position on the outgoing Vice-Chancellor or any matter concerning the University of Ibadan.
According to the students’ body, “At no point was the leadership of the Union consulted before the statement was made public,” adding that the publication should not be regarded as an official position of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union.
The Union acknowledged its long history of engaging university management on issues affecting students, noting that such engagements have sometimes involved disagreement, advocacy and constructive dialogue.
It, however, emphasised that its engagements with the university management are guided by the principles of courage, responsibility and constructive engagement.
The Students’ Union further reaffirmed its commitment to defending the interests of students and speaking on matters affecting them through its officially recognised channels.
It warned against actions capable of misrepresenting its position before the university community and the general public.
The Union also restated its commitment to protecting the welfare of students, preserving the integrity of the Students’ Union and contributing meaningfully to the continued peace, progress and excellence of Nigeria’s premier university.
