The University of Ibadan has mourned the death of Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose, a foremost African linguist and Foundation President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), who died at the age of 94.
His death was announced earlier today.
Professor Bamgbose, who was a recipient of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM), Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (FNAL) and Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.), made significant contributions to the development of linguistics and the academic and intellectual life of Nigeria.
He served the University of Ibadan meritoriously and was Dean of the Faculty of Arts between 1971 and 1973.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, on behalf of the university community, commiserated with the family, friends, colleagues and the wider intellectual community over the loss.
The university described the late scholar as a distinguished academic whose contributions to linguistics and national intellectual development would continue to be remembered.
