Despite the approval of ₦9.97 billion for the renovation and rehabilitation of public schools across Oyo State, many institutions resumed academic activities today, April 29, 2025, under poor and unsafe conditions.
The allocation, which was announced months ago, was meant to address critical infrastructure deficits, including perimeter fencing, construction of toilets, drilling of solar-powered boreholes, installation of solar lights, and provision of new furniture across various schools.
However, checks across the state revealed that several public schools remain in a state of disrepair. Classrooms are still dilapidated, roofs are leaking, and furniture shortages persist. In many cases, there are no signs of the promised upgrades, raising concerns about the utilization of the funds.
The resumption of students into these uncompleted and unsafe environments has again thrown up questions regarding project implementation and accountability in the state’s education sector.
While the government had pledged a massive facelift of school infrastructure, the reality on the ground shows that the majority of public schools are yet to benefit from the billion-naira intervention, leaving pupils and teachers to grapple with the same poor conditions that have plagued the sector for years.
As the new academic term officially kicks off today, the anticipated transformation of public schools in Oyo State remains largely a promise unfulfilled.
