The President of the Amalgamated Union of Motor Mechanics and Technicians of Nigeria, Engr. Dr. Oseni Suleiman, has called on Nigerians to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance and safety checks as a critical step toward reducing road accidents and ensuring the longevity of their vehicles.
In a statement made available to newsmen, Engr. Suleiman emphasized that a large percentage of avoidable road mishaps in the country are linked to poor vehicle maintenance, negligence, and the use of substandard components.
According to him, “Many vehicle owners only visit the mechanic when a fault becomes obvious or severe. This reactive approach is dangerous. Preventive maintenance is the key to safety, efficiency, and cost savings in the long run.”
He advised motorists to adopt a culture of routine servicing, including regular inspection of brakes, tyres, engine components, suspension systems, and electrical fittings, noting that early detection of faults can prevent costly repairs and tragic incidents.
The AUOMMATON President also warned against patronizing unqualified technicians, stressing that only trained and certified professionals should handle vehicle repairs and maintenance.
“Your vehicle is a complex machine that requires professional attention. Entrusting it to unskilled hands not only damages the vehicle but also puts lives at risk,” he said.
Engr. Suleiman further urged Nigerians to desist from the use of fake and substandard spare parts, reiterating that such practices compromise vehicle performance and safety.
He added that environmental factors such as poor road conditions and extreme weather can accelerate wear and tear, making it even more important for vehicle owners to carry out frequent checks.
The union also encouraged transport operators, fleet owners, and commercial drivers to establish strict maintenance schedules and adhere to safety standards in order to protect passengers and goods.
“As a union, we are committed to promoting safety, professionalism, and public awareness. We believe that with the right maintenance culture, many of the accidents recorded on our roads today can be significantly reduced,” he stated.
Engr. Suleiman concluded by calling on government agencies, stakeholders, and the media to support nationwide sensitization campaigns on vehicle safety and maintenance best practices.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every Nigerian has a role to play in ensuring that our roads are safer for all,” he added.
