A group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, known as the Oyo PDP-Visionaries, has warned alleged opposition elements against what it described as attempts to destabilise the state and derail the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.
The group, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Ibadan by its Coordinator, Qudus Olayide, alleged that chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside other influential figures, were plotting to orchestrate the impeachment of the governor through the State House of Assembly.
According to the group, the alleged plan is destined to fail, stressing that residents of Oyo State would resist any move capable of disrupting the peace and stability currently being enjoyed.
Olayide maintained that those behind the purported plot underestimated the political awareness of the people, noting that the state had evolved beyond what he described as past political manipulations.
“The state has become too sophisticated to allow a repeat of 2006 in 2026. The plan is driven by selfish and questionable motives, and the individuals involved are pursuing personal gains at the expense of the collective interest,” he said.
The group also referenced former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, alleging his involvement in the unfolding political tension, while claiming that different actors were playing varied roles for pecuniary benefits.
While acknowledging that Florence Ajimobi had distanced herself from the alleged plot, the group pointed to statements credited to the APC suggesting that Governor Makinde should have been impeached earlier as evidence that the opposition had questions to answer.
Reaffirming support for the governor, the PDP group warned what it termed “anarchists” to desist from actions capable of inciting unrest, adding that the people of the state would strongly oppose any attempt to undermine democratic governance.
The group further advised the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, to remain non-partisan and avoid actions that could be interpreted as political alignment.
It expressed concern over the monarch’s recent engagements, including visits to the Presidential Villa, suggesting such moves could be politicised by opposition elements.
The statement also noted that the monarch’s reported meeting with Fayose amid the political developments could send the wrong signal, urging him to preserve the integrity of the traditional institution by staying above partisan interests.
The PDP-Visionaries concluded by emphasising the need to protect the sanctity of the Olubadan stool and sustain the cordial relationship between the monarch and Governor Makinde, which it described as beneficial to the peace and progress of Oyo State.
