The South-West Governors’ Forum has reiterated its call on the Federal Government to expedite the establishment of state police, emphasizing that further delays would be detrimental to the nation’s security.
This renewed appeal was made during an emergency security meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State on Monday, which aimed to address the influx of suspected criminal elements into the region and other pressing issues affecting the South-West.
The forum, led by Lagos State Governor and Chairman of the Forum, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, presented a communiqué at the end of the closed-door meeting held at the Oyo State Governor’s Office, Agodi, Ibadan.
The governors also announced plans to establish a South-West Security Fund to bolster security, promote regional development, and enhance inter-state cooperation among the six states in the geo-political zone.
While commending President Tinubu for his efforts in combating insecurity, the Forum expressed solidarity with the Federal Government over recent security incidents in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states.
The meeting reviewed critical issues affecting the South-West region, including rising security threats, agricultural development, economic stability, and regional integration.
The governors reaffirmed their commitment to collective action in advancing socio-economic development and urged residents to remain united, uphold peace, religious tolerance, and social harmony.
The meeting hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde also had in attendance, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa from Ondo State, Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, while Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, was represented by his Deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi.
The call for state police comes amid growing demands for improved security measures, including tighter border surveillance, intelligence sharing, and inter-state coordination to safeguard lives and property in the region.
