The University of Ibadan community has stood in awe following the outstanding performance of UI Law graduates at the Bar Final Examinations of the Nigerian Law School held January 2020.
The premier university’s products who were part of the LLB Class of 2018, shone at the 2020 Call to Bar ceremony as they clinched 80% of the awards shared- 28 out of 38 prizes.
They include; Olalere Yusuf Asamu ( Overall Best Graduating Student)- twelve prizes; Adebayo, Deborah Ibukun Oluwa (Best Overall Female Student of the Year)- four prizes.
Others are; Madu, Kelechi Chris-Angelo; Ayeku, Adeyemi Kehinde and Udeh, Kosisochukwu Chukwunonso with two prizes each, while Anyaeji, Ohizoba Theodora; Adebayo, Temilade Jumoke; Adewole Enifeoluwa Philip; Banjo, Afolasade Omobowale and Ojini, Ese Isioma won one prize each.
University of Ibadan, The Best In Nigeria, West Africa..
Recently, in the Times Higher Education World Universities Rankings 2021, University of Ibadan was ranked 1st in Nigeria and West Africa, 7th in West Africa, and 440th in the world at large.
Following the latest outstanding performance, the school’s Vice Chancellor, Dean of Law, Students’ Union and others have deemed it fit to celebrate the institution and her students, graduates.
According to the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka;
“We received the news with much joy in our hearts, coming barely two weeks after our great University was ranked the best in West Africa, number 7 in Africa and among the top 500 universities in the world. We will continue to post superior performance in the years ahead. We congratulate our students, knowing full well that in the words of our University Anthem, this is ‘Greatness won with honest toil’.
“We acknowledge with gratitude the persistence, hardwork, innovation and perseverance of the members of the Faculty. The University Management will continue to support you as we appreciate that Law is one of our flagship programmes.”
The Dean of Law UI, Professor Simisola Olutoyin Akintola while expressing her happiness towards the outstanding feats of UI students, she said since nearly all the prize winners were UI students, she was looking for the very few on the list who were not Ibadan products.
Professor Oluyemisi Adefunke Bamgbose, SAN, former Dean of Law and member of the Governing Council, described the achievements as a consequence of a combination of faithfulness of God, Uncompromising and supportive University Management, first class and committed faculty staff, and intelligent and diligent students.
According to Professor Israel Adeniyi Olatunbosun, immediate Past Dean of Law and current Acting Vice-Chancellor, KolaDaisi University, Ibadan:
“Our admission policy has been an added advantage and contribution to outstanding performances we have been recording at the Nigerian Law School.”
He further reiterated, “Remarkably, UI graduates have proven consistently superlative records of high quality and attest to our maxim that certainly if it must be from UI, it must be of outstanding quality.”
While appreciating UI VC, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, Dr. John Akintayo, a Reader in Law, Quondam Head of Department and one of the first generation of students of Law at the University of Ibadan in the 1980s, said, “Thank you for your support sir. My VC sir, we are quite excited. This has proved to the whole world that Ibadan is the best place to study Law in Nigeria.”
The statement released by the Students’ Union of the institution partly read; “With pride and unapologetic effrontery, we say; ‘Once it is UI, it is of absolute quality’. UI will always remain the first and the best”
