The residents of Aba-Odo in Akineyele Local Government Area of Oyo State have frowned at the relocation of a refuse dumping site from Old Akinyele road to the main Oyo-Ibadan expressway which is said to be hazardous to their health.
At the Aba-Odo refuse dumping site, unfriendly odours, burning of dirts also result in different havoc to residents and vehicles that ply the road.
This newspaper gathered that at the former location, burning of dirt especially during the harmattan period like this caused cloudy weather that vehicles hardly see where they are going. The reasons for the relocation are still affecting the residents of Aba-odo.
According to a resident, Adigun Ayominde who spoke with OYOMIND, the dumping site is more like having a deadly road, men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Police officers only come to road users’ rescue when the deed had been done.
“At the former location whenever they are burning refuses, it usually caused a large sum of smoke mixed with cloudy weather of hamatan especially at night and early morning in November/ December to January period.
“It usually cursed sight blurry to the motorist using this expressway early morning and at night. Even it’s has cursed several accidents in the time past that claims life’s when blurry sighted micras ran under trailers in one early morning last year, likewise in 2018. Amuludun and a television station cover it at that time.
“The road safety and police at checking point along this express road only came to the rescue after the deal as been done never play a preventive role at all.”
Complaining further about the situation of the site, Mr. Segun expressed that the government is playing politics with relocating a dumping site directly adjacent to a zonal Model School by Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). He felt there should be proper communication between the state and federal government especially.
“The dumping of refuse site formally located at the old road of Akinyele road has been relocated to the Main Oyo Expressway even directly adjacent to where the federal government is building a gigantic Zonal Model School through UBEC.
“The question is what’s kind of correlation is this? Oyo state Dumping site at the front of FG Model School, what kind of learning environment are we building around our children?. Where is the communication between the FG/State Government? And why playing politics with everything even at the detriment of our born and unborn children.”
The residents of Aba-Odo hereby plead with Oyo State Commissioner for Environment, Commissioner for Health, Oyo State Government, UBEC, and Federal Government to come to their rescue and save them from being exposed to diseases and other related havoc.
