When Governor Seyi Makinde assumed office in 2019, he made a strategic move by establishing the Oyo State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. Recognizing the critical role of energy in driving development, the Governor appointed Barr. Nurudeen Temilolu Seun Ashamu as the pioneer Commissioner of this newly formed ministry. This initiative ensures that healthcare facilities in even the most remote areas are equipped with reliable energy sources, thus improving healthcare delivery and outcomes.
The ministry’s interventions extend beyond new projects to addressing long-standing issues. Notably, it has facilitated IPP interventions in communities that had been without power supply for over a decade. This action has rekindled hope in these communities, underscoring the government’s dedication to inclusive development.
Looking ahead, the Oyo State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is set to play an even more pivotal role. With the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission recently transferring regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Oyo to the newly established Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the state is poised to take full control of its electricity regulation, in line with the Electricity Act of 2023. This shift marks a new chapter in the state’s energy sector, promising greater efficiency and localized governance.
Furthermore, the ongoing development of a gas station in Oke Ogun is another significant project championed by the ministry. This initiative, facilitated by the Oyo State government, is expected to boost local energy resources, contributing to economic growth and sustainability in the region.

UI Taught me the Virtues of Integrity, Diligence, and Discipline- Providus Bank DMD
The Deputy Managing Director of Providus Bank, Mr Kingsley Aigbokhaevbo, has stated that he further imbibed the virtues of integrity, diligence, and discipline during his days as a student of the University of Ibadan.
He recalled that he came from a humble family where virtues were taught and had to rely on these virtues to survive while in the University.
Mr Aigbokhaevbo spoke during his investiture as a UI@75 Ambassador in Ibadan.
He said he was highly committed to his studies, learnt to survive and to build relationships and did not indulge in vices.
He assured that he would continue to be a good Ambassador of the University.
Mr Aigbokhaevbo, thereafter, presented a symbolic cheque of Twenty Million Naira to the University on behalf of Providus Bank and promised to make an extra personal donation of Ten Million Naira.
Mr Kingsley Aigbokhaevbo obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1988.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS had earlier told Mr Aigbokhaevbo that the University Management had identified all the outstanding virtues in him adding that this was why he was being decorated as an Ambassador of the University.
Professor Adebowale said federal universities are currently facing challenges of underfunding and UI is leveraging its alumni, friends, and other wellwishers to generate extra funds to achieve its core mandates of teaching, research and community service.
The Chairman of the UI@75 Anniversary Committee and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Professor Peter O. Olapegba had listed the thematic areas of need of the University.
He said it was the ambition of the present Vice-Chancellor to raise a sum of $200 Million to execute projects that would lift the University higher.
He said such projects include the upscaling of the University Endowment Fund, scholarships for students, improvement of infrastructure, provision of alternative clean energy, transformation of research innovations for national development, and provision of funds for staff mobility and development.
The Registrar of the University, Mr. Ganiyu O. Saliu decorated Mr. Aigbokhaevbo with the Ambassadorial sash as well as presented him with a plaque.
NELFUND: UI VC Hails FG for Establishment of Student Loan
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, has commended the Federal Government of Nigeria for establishing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
He gave the commendation in an opening address that he delivered during an interactive session between the Abuja NELFUND Office and students of the University of Ibadan in the University’s Trenchard Hall.
Professor Adebowale commended the Federal Government’s efforts to support students in furthering their education with ease.
The Vice-Chancellor explained that the interactive session was part of NELFUND’s outreach sensitisation programme to encourage UI students who may be hesitant to apply due to a lack of understanding of the programme.
He reiterated the ongoing challenge of funding in federal institutions and acknowledged that this loan scheme was a significant step toward alleviating students’ financial burdens.
He, therefore, encouraged the students to take advantage of the opportunity but to use it wisely.
The VC also advised students to be cautious when filling out online forms to protect their data from fraudulent individuals.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Aderonke Baiyeroju, in her welcome remarks, thanked the NELFUND staff for educating UI students about the loan scheme.
She stressed that many students may not realize that NELFUND is a lifeline provided by the Federal Government to ease the payment of school fees.
The Director of Process and Compliance at NELFUND, Mr. Aliyu Aliyu Mohammed said the Fund was established in fulfillment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s electioneering promises and urged students to key into the project.
The NELFUND Head of ICT, Mr. Olawale Ogunleye assured students that the loan scheme was genuine and encouraged them to explore the opportunity.
He noted that the portal for applications, which opened on May 24, 2024, remains open to all Nigerian students.
He explained that the loan is a revolving scheme, with the repayment starting two years after the completion of the NYSC scheme.
Mr. Ogunleye, while guiding the students on the application process, explained that the loan fund was established to improve literacy levels in Nigeria.
The Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu O. Saliu announced that the university would launch a “UI Student NELFUND” page for questions and answers as well as create a wallet for each student to manage the loan funds wisely.
The interactive session was hybrid, with NELFUND staff joining virtually.
Students were afforded the opportunity to ask questions.
Gospel Minister Dunsin Oyekan Pays Pays Courtesy Visit to UI VC
Gospel Minister Dunsin Oyekan has paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, ahead of the Upper Room worship, organised for the University of Ibadan community.
Professor Adebowale warmly welcomed Minister Oyekan to the University, expressing the University Management’s delight in hosting him for the event.
The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the minister for his dedication to gospel worship and for choosing to bless the University community with his ministry at such a time.

1. SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBERY: On 17/7/2024 at about 0300hrs, suspect, Mohammed Bello ‘m’ age 28yrs of Idi-Igba Onipanu Road, Ogbomoso was arrested at Egbeda Village Ogbomoso/Ilorin Highway by patrol men from Orile-Igbon Police Divisional Headquarters for participating in a robbery incident reported by a victim (name withheld), who was dispossed of his phone, MP3 among others at the location. The case was transferred to SCID, Iyaganku on same date for discreet investigation.
Upon the receipt of the case, the Anti-Robbery Section of the SCID was detailed to investigate. During the preliminary investigation, the said Mohammed Bello ‘m’ confessed that he is a member of a “5-man syndicate” specialized in robbing road users along Ogbomoso/Ilorin Highway, using cutlasses and sticks.
The Anti-Robbery Section swiftly swung into action leading to the eventual arrest of suspects; Aliu Usman ‘m’, Aliu Muhammed ‘m’ (who is a member of another robbery syndicate along the axis), Kabiru Abass ‘m’ and Jemilu Ibrahim ‘m’ (who are suspected receivers and the group motorcyclists respectively.
They were arrested by the team at Sabo Ogbomoso in Oyo state and the suspects confessed committing the crime. Exhibits recovered from them include Four (4) Bajaj Motorcycles, Ten (10) Mobile Phones, Two (2) HP Laptops, One (1) Motorcycle Number Plate, One (1) Wrist Watch, Six (6) Motorcycle keys, One (1) Cutlass and One (1) Knife.

2. SUSPECTED ROBBERY AND STEALING: On 4th August, 2024, the suspect, one Alayo Opeyemi ‘m’ who was allegedly involved in a case of Stealing was transferred from Challenge Police Divisional Headquarters to SCID, Iyaganku for discreet investigation.
On 2nd August 2024 at about 1738hrs, the suspect was sighted by a victim and was eventually arrested besides George and Duke School, Akala Expressway, Ibadan, when he was following a potential victim, in order to trick him and collect his phone. My Performance Will Curb Japa- President Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has implored African leaders to make more strategic and deliberate efforts to address the exodus of skills and talent from Africa.
These efforts, he said, include stemming tribalism, rewarding performance and reforming archaic judicial systems.
Speaking at a dinner held in his honour at the People’s Palace in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, on Wednesday night, President Tinubu said leaders must encourage research and development with the provision of appropriate rewards.
Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed this in a statement he signed on Thursday titled ‘President Tinubu: We can stop skill exodus by enhancing performance incentivisation in Africa.’
The President said: “Why are we complaining about healthcare problems if our doctors cannot have a home in our continent? If our nurses are faced with destitution, and if our judicial system is archaic?”
Tinubu, who is on a three-day official visit, said development in Africa will begin when the continent starts to look inward for solutions.
He argued, “Tribalism has no place in our nation or region. We have to strengthen the continent. Cultivate and maintain peace together and help one another.
“We have to develop our resources for our progress. Find solutions among ourselves and focus incisively on research and development, and reward those research and development programmes. We must bring out the results ourselves. We must not outsource them or sell them out.
“To the international organisations, we are partners. We will continue to be partners, but we must implement more than half of the results of the research established here. We have many youths to take care of. Millions yearning for progress.”
The Nigerian leader thanked his host, President Teodoro Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea for the invitation to visit Malabo.
He stated, “It is a joy coming down here from Abuja, and for me, it is a homecoming. We are one single family on the continent. We are like twins held together at the hips. We have nowhere to go, but to cling to each other.
“Our gathering here is a significant milestone in the history of Africa, particularly for West and Central Africa; between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. I am happy to hear very deep thoughts coming from my brother, the President of Equatorial Guinea, concerning Africa.”
Tinubu added that Africa must solve its own problems.
Advocating a mindset shift in Africa’s self-perception, he said, “For the world, Africa is wretched and ragged, full of conflicts. We say no. Peace, stability, and democracy are the way forward for our collective and progressive development. We have agreed on that with President Mbasogo.
“We definitely will continue to promote peace and stability throughout the continent. Some of our other brothers in shackles are still there, at each other’s throats. We will both work together and do whatever is possible to promote peace.”
Tinubu said the long-standing conflicts in the Congo and Sahel require urgent collective action if sustainable peace is the goal.
“What we are seeing in certain parts of the continent and areas of the Sahel is not pleasant for our today and not promising for our tomorrow. We have to work together to make peace the focus of our development.
“Without peace, we cannot have development. Our problem is not that we do not understand what to do. We identify them, and we understand what to do. Our problem is how and when we should do them. I say the time is now.
“We had better roll up our sleeves, put on our knickers, and move strongly for the peace and stability of our continent,” the President stated.
In his remarks earlier, the President of Equatorial Guinea thanked President Tinubu for honouring his invitation.
“It is with utmost affection and respect that I would like to greet President Tinubu and wish him and his delegation a warm welcome to Equatorial Guinea.
“We wish to express our gratitude for your acceptance of our invitation. We feel honoured to host this meeting that brings us together in Malabo,’’ President Mbasogo stated.
The leader of Equatorial Guinea called for more collaboration and solidarity between both countries, stating that “Nigeria has always held a special place in our foreign policy.”
President Mbasogo said the momentum and dynamism in the bilateral relations should be strengthened while highlighting previous mutual agreements in the areas of education, mining, defence, security, and agriculture.
“We recognise Nigeria’s potential and experience as the largest economy in Africa since 2015, and we consider it one of the great global emerging markets.
Senator Alli Condoles Families of Victims in Ojoo-Iwo Road Accident
Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in the multiple accident that occurred at the Agbowo axis of the Ojoo-Iwo road section of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
This is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Ibadan.
Senator Alli extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured.
The accident, which claimed 16 lives and left 17 others with varying degrees of injury, has been attributed to a brake failure.
The lawmaker described the incident as a devastating blow to the community, calling for urgent measures to prevent future occurrences.
He called on all road users to prioritise safety and adhere to traffic regulations to avert such tragedies.
“Proper road maintenance and regular checks on vehicles to prevent mechanical failures, which have been a significant cause of accidents on Nigerian roads is very important.
“I call on the relevant authorities to intensify their efforts in road safety awareness campaigns,” he said.
Also, Senator Alli urged the Federal Government to take immediate steps to address the ongoing construction issues along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
He called on the Ministry of Works to charge the contractors responsible for the project to expedite the construction process and ensure safety measures are in place to protect road users.
The lawmaker reiterated his commitment to advocating for the safety and well-being of constituents as well as all Nigerians.
He assured the public that he would continue to push for necessary interventions to improve road safety and prevent the loss of lives on the nation’s highways.
Makinde Declares August 20 Work-Free Day to Mark Isese Day
Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has declared August 20 a work-free day to mark 2024 Isese Day.
This was contained in a circular issued by the Secretary to Oyo State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo.
Recall that Governor Makinde had stated last year that every August 20 would be observed as a work-free day in the state in commemoration of Isese Day.
The governor, in the circular, enjoined all traditional worshippers and all citizens to use the day to pray for the peace, unity and stability of the state in particular and the country in general.
Borehole Projects: Sanusi Lauds Senator Alli’s Grassroots Development Initiative
