Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke of Osun State has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), leaving Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State as the only remaining PDP governor in the Southwest.
Adeleke’s resignation, which came via a letter addressed to the PDP chairman in Sagba Abogunde Ward 2, Ede North, was made public in the early hours of Tuesday. The development comes amid increasing defections within the PDP, as several governors and high-profile members have exited the party, citing internal crises and concerns over its nomination processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adeleke notably distanced himself from the recently held PDP National Convention in Ibadan ,hosted in Makinde’s stronghold, signaling a deepening rift within the party’s Southwest structure.
Governor Makinde, who has taken up a leadership role in steering the troubled party regionally, now faces a tough task of holding the PDP together as defections continue to weaken its base. Political observers say Makinde, a two-term governor, is positioning himself for a possible run for the presidency in 2027, potentially against incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
