Democracy is heavily associated with Separation of Powers, Checks and balances, however, if this is absent, we can believe that we are slowly drifting towards anarchy and that’s the State of Oyo State today.

Heavily shocked by the news of the impeachment of the deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan. I like to comment that this is what is obtainable in a setting where the legislative arm does not act independent of the Executive.

The legislators are elected to perform the role of checks and balances to the Executives arm and curtail it’s excesses, the legislators are not appointees of the executive arm of Government and they shouldn’t act like stooges, puppets or sycophants. This attitude is getting prevalent in almost all state legislatures across the country and should not be allowed to be embedded in our style of governance.

They are elected to fight and defend the interests of their various constituencies and they should be alive to these duties.

Politics is about the people, particularly the majority. Take for instance, the outcome of Osun State, gubernatorial election.

Legislative arm is an important arm of government and a defender of any democracy from a tyrannical rule.
