The management of the University of Ibadan has condemned how a video of a female skater which went viral has generated issues and unkind comments on social media.
In a statement released by the University’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Olubunmi O. Faluyi expressed that the Professor involved made an attempt to stop the skater did so to safe her as against what was on social media that she was rough-handled.
OYOMIND gathered that a Professor of Chemistry and immediate past Focal Officer id SERVICOM, Prof. J.A.O. Woods saw the female skater with her male counterpart along Oduduwa Road, an action he knew to be prohibited on campus due to how busy the road is.
Prof. Wood stopped the skaters and requested that they should be taken to the Campus Security office.
The University stated that the Professor did not at any point rough-handled the lady while it reiterate the prohibition of skating on major roads on campus, an action the management declares to be illegal and unsafe.
The statement reads;
“The attention of the University Management has been drawn to a video trending on the Internet.
“The fact of the situation was that Professor J. A. O. Woods, a distinguished professor of Chemistry and the immediate past Focal Officer of SERVICOM on the campus saw the lady and another male skating along Oduduwa Road, the busiest Road on campus. It is important to state that Skating on major roads on campus is illegal, in the same vein that learner drivers are prohibited.
“Professor Woods stopped the skaters and requested that they should be taken to the Campus Security office. At no time did he rough-handle the lady. Posting the video on Social media was a pure act of mischief.
“In general, skating on major roads is illegal and unsafe. Worldwide it is only allowed on walkways and designated parks and not on highways.
“The actions taken by the Professor was to protect the lives of the skaters and other road users.
“Management therefore, condemns the way the story is being posted on Social Media and unkind comments made.
“Management seizes this opportunity to reiterate that it is illegal to skate on major roads within the campus. Learner drivers are also not allowed on the major roads within the University campus during peak periods.
“Thank you.”
