The Oyo State branch of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association on Friday 24th November 2023 held its Annual Alumni lecture at Institution’s popular Trenchard Hall.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS who also doubled as the Chairman of the occasion was ably represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administrative, Prof. Peter Olapegba.
Olapegba in his opening speech cited the relationship between the Alumni Association and the University, including their significant support towards the university’s growth despite the drawbacks from the government to fund universities in Nigeria.
“There are ways by which Universities both here in Nigeria and outside generate funds in running the university and this is by three (3) ways; Endowment, Students school fees, and the alumni engagement.” He said.
He also spoke about the gesture of the Alumni on how they contributed significant percentage of the 52.9Billion in 2021.
The Guest Speaker, Mr. Victor Etuokwu, did justice to the topic, “Tertiary Institutions As Catalyst For Transformational Leadership”.
Etuokwu, Deputy Managing Director (DMD), Access bank PLc explained the role of a leader and that of a transformational leader.
He said “Tertiary Institutions are catalysts for developing transformational leaders. They are not merely placesof academic pursuit; they’re places for opportunity.
“They provide an environment where people meet, exchange ideas, share dreams, and in some cases meet their future business partners. Many leaders are created at the universities because the relationships formed with peers, faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders create opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and support throughout life.”
“As Africans, building great institutions within the continent, we had to pursue things that were important to us and things we are passionate about. We knew very early on that, creating wealth is important but creating sustainability is crucial.” He added.
The event was graced by distinguished personnel, Alumni; such as Mr. Tunde Olayiwol, Chairman UIAA Oyo State, Mr. Lekan Ajisafe, Mr. Agada Apoche, CEO Pharmatek Directive; Mr. Tayo Malik, Mr. Niyi Toluwalope (Ayodeji Afolabi representative), Prof. Alonge, other members of the UIAA Oyo State executives, and students of the University all in attendance.
