As the schools in the state move towards holiday period, the gubernatorial candidate of Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2023 general election, Aduragbemi Animasawun Euba has urged the executive governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde to provide adequate security for schools in the state.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Tuesday, Aduragbemi emphasized the havoc caused by the secondary school students at the tail end of every term.
The only female candidate who is now a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said that cultism has become the order of the day in the public secondary schools, especially in Ibadan metropolis which made unrest inevitable.
“As a citizen of this state, whose love for youths and education knows no bound, I want to commend the governor for the efforts put in place to ensure that out of school students reduce to a minimal level.
Having said that, it is important that the issue of hooliganism, cultism among other vices leading to unrest in our public schools are being looked into before they escalate to what can not be contained.
At the tail end of every term, especially when schools are done with examinations, students who are into cultism use this period to unleash mayhem on their colleagues in nearby schools, which in the long run lead to destruction of properties, injuries to residents and innocent commuters and also the disruption of peace in whichever communities the schools fall under.
“This is evident in the decision of the state government to shutdown some schools due to unrest caused by these students. In a letter dated, 14th March, 2022, the state government through the office of the then Honourable Commissioner for Education, Barr. Rahman Abiodun Abdul-Raheem announced the closure of some schools in order to arrest the unabating violence crisis.
“Amongst the schools whose closure was ordered are; Anglican Grammar School, Molete; Ibadan Grammar School, Molete; Olubi Memorial Grammar School, Kudeti; St Lukes Grammar School, Molete; St Lukes College, Molete; and St. David Grammar School, Kudeti. Surprisingly, these schools fall under the same axis (Molete and Kudeti).
“With great dismay, as porous as these communities are with the high level of decadence, the security architecture to arrest the situation is far from being enough to completely solve the problem at hand.
“Since our schools will be going for another holiday in few days as information out there has it that most of them are done with their examinations, I want to implore our able governor to quickly put in place, necessary measures to brief of the security in the known area and other prone communities rather than wait for these students to unleash the terror and disturbing the peace of innocent citizens before actions are being taken.”
