Renowned barrister and Ibadan-born legal practitioner, Wale Adeagbo, has voiced his disapproval of Chief Femi Babalola Jogor’s recent interview, wherein Jogor claimed to have participated in the impeachment proceedings against former Governor of Oyo State, Senator Rasheed Ladoja. Adeagbo considers Jogor’s statement unnecessary, reckless, and unguarded, emphasizing its implication of pride in involvement in an unconstitutional act.
In the published version of the interview, Jogor stated, “I had my own roles and we shared roles out, and one way or the other, we got it done.” However, Adeagbo argues that this bold statement by Chief Femi Babalola Jogor reflects a lack of caution, displaying an unwarranted sense of accomplishment for participating in an irrational act.
Adeagbo draws attention to the fact that the impeachment saga surrounding Senator Ladoja gave rise to several significant legal battles, including the case of INAKOJU v. ADELEKE. The Supreme Court of Nigeria, in its final ruling, declared the impeachment of Senator Ladoja unconstitutional. As a result, all individuals involved in the impeachment were implicated in an act of unconstitutionality.
Adeagbo emphasizes that Chief Femi Babalola Jogor’s admission of participation in this unconstitutional act, in defiance of the Supreme Court’s decision, renders his statement highly irrational. Adeagbo suggests that in a more sane and orderly society, Chief Femi Babalola might even face a contempt citation for making such a declaration.
