Former President of the Senate, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki called for the immediate suspension of the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention, scheduled to hold in Ibadan on November 15–16, 2025.
Saraki made this position known after a meeting with members of the PDP Board of Trustees (BOT) Reconciliation Team, led by Wakili Adamawa, Ambassador Hassan Adamu, who paid him a courtesy visit in Ilorin on Wednesday.
According to Saraki, the team had sought his opinion on possible ways to restore peace and unity within the party. He described the discussions as “meaningful and incisive,” noting that key issues affecting the PDP were thoroughly examined.
He expressed deep regret that, despite the efforts of many stakeholders, the upcoming convention had become embroiled in “extensive controversy, both political and legal,” adding that the situation does not bode well for the party or Nigeria’s democracy.
He warned that proceeding with the convention amid conflicting court orders would be detrimental, as the outcome may lack legitimacy.
“Political matters can hardly be resolved through the courts,” Saraki stated. “Affairs of political parties are best resolved amicably, with all sides seated round the table. Legal battles will only continue to cause friction.”
He stressed that, as a leader responsible for the aspirations of his people, he could not support any action that might jeopardize their political interests.
To resolve the current impasse, Saraki advised the BOT to constitute a Caretaker Committee within the next two days to manage the party’s affairs temporarily. He emphasized that this step would restore confidence among party members and potential candidates preparing for upcoming elections.
“Going ahead with the National Convention in Ibadan will only serve to fuel the present crisis,” he cautioned. “It is a waste of effort and does not have my support. It’s not too late to find a win-win solution.”
The PDP BOT team is expected to brief other stakeholders on the outcome of the meeting as efforts to restore peace within the party continue.
