The Federal Government of Nigeria has ordered that the governing council of the University of Ibadan reconvene to nominate another member of the council, who is not a member of the Senate to serve on the selection committee in place of the withdrawn member representing the Federal Ministry of Education.
This is contained in a letter signed by the Deputy Executive Secretary (General Administration) of the National Universities Commission, Chris Maiyaki on behalf of the Executive Secretary dated 23rd November 2020.
OYOMIND gathered that the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Chief Joshua Waklek had on October, 28th 2020 sent a status report to the Honourable Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu on the appointment of a new vice chancellor for the university.
According to Maiyaki, the governing council has been ordered to re-invite all the eighteen (18) applicants who had initially satisfied the requirements outlined in the advertisement for the position of the Vice-Chancellor and that the final selection must be conducted in full compliance with laid down procedures.
The outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka, who many have alleged to be tampering with the selection process was also ordered to stay clear of the envisaged senate meeting to be reconvened by the Governing Council.
“The Governing Council is to review the entire processes leading to impasse in the Vice-Chancellor new Vice-Chancellor, including repeating the online selection of the representatives of Senate; the Vice-Chancellor should rescue himself from the envisaged senate meeting.
“The Governing Council should re-invite all the eighteen (18) applicants, who had initially satisfied the requirements outlined in the advertisement for the position of the Vice-Chancellor and.
“The final selection process must be conducted in full compliance with laid down procedures openly and transparently, and total romance with the provision of the Universities Miscellaneous Act (2007)”.
The University of Ibadan has been battling crisis on the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor as the incumbent tenure ends 30th November, 2020.
