The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State has said Governor Seyi Makinde can only join the party if he is prepared to submit himself to its rules, internal democratic structures, and established procedures.
The Oyo State Chairman of the party, Mr. Yinka Olona, stated this on Monday while speaking on the sidelines of a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Amuludun FM field, Moniya, in Akinyele Local Government Area.
Addressing speculations over a possible defection by the governor, Olona said while the ADC is open to new members, it would not compromise its internal democracy or allow any individual, regardless of status, to dominate or hijack its structure, The PUNCH reported.
According to him, joining the ADC is strictly conditional on respect for the party’s constitution and processes.
“Let me be clear: anyone is free to join our party, including the governor, but such a person must be ready to abide by our rules and internal democratic principles. The ADC is not a party that can be hijacked by anybody,” Olona said.
He stressed that the party operates a firm internal system that applies equally to both old and new members.
“The ADC has laid-down procedures and strong internal mechanisms. Nobody can just walk in and take over the party. Everything must be done according to our rules,” he added.
Olona also dismissed reports suggesting that there had been formal talks between the party leadership and Governor Makinde, saying no such engagement had taken place.
“As far as I am concerned, there has been no discussion. If he has been speaking with individuals, I am not aware. But if he decides to come, he must follow due process like every other member,” he said.
The ADC chairman described the party as a growing coalition driven by the hardship faced by Nigerians, noting that the movement is attracting notable political actors across the country.
“The ADC is now a coalition party formed in response to the suffering of Nigerians. The goal is to rescue the country from the hardship imposed by the old political order and reposition Nigeria where it should be,” he said.
Olona added that both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had failed Nigerians, insisting that the ADC represents a credible alternative.
“The next election will be Nigerians versus the old political order. APC and PDP have failed the people. ADC is the alternative,” he stated.
Also speaking at the event, an ADC governorship aspirant in the state, Mr. Niyi Aborishade, said the party distinguishes itself through fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity for all aspirants.
“ADC is a truly democratic party. It gives everyone a level playing field, regardless of status, wealth, or influence. Candidates are not imposed here,” Aborishade said.
