Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday visited the State House, Abuja, where he held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a development that has stirred fresh political speculation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Makinde, a prominent chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was reported to have arrived at the Presidential Villa shortly after Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and proceeded straight to the President’s office, TheNation reported.
The visit has drawn attention given Makinde’s political antecedents, particularly his role as a leading member of the G-5 governors within the PDP during the build-up to the 2023 presidential election.
The G-5 governors had opposed the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the PDP’s presidential candidate, insisting that the party’s zoning arrangement favoured a southern candidate following the eight-year administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Other members of the influential G-5 bloc included former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; ex-Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; and former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.
While details of Makinde’s meeting with President Tinubu were not disclosed, The Nation reports that the visit has further fueled discussions around possible political realignments ahead of the next general election.
